Background

A long-time donor to Arizona State University (ASU) has made a gift to the university of approximately 430 acres of privately owned, undeveloped land adjacent to the City of Colton section of Reche Canyon. The gift will ultimately support educational programs and student scholarships at ASU. ASU is managing this gift through its not-for-profit ASU Enterprise Partners’ subsidiary, University Realty. University Realty is exploring plans that would conserve significant open space and provide single-family residential opportunities that, if developed, could catalyze improvements for the Reche Canyon area.

Process

The project’s planning process, undertaken by University Realty, is exploring how best to develop the land and help make improvements to the surrounding Reche Canyon area through careful analysis and collaboration with the City of Colton and local community. The results of the planning process and community input are guiding the project plans and preparation of a draft Specific Plan and Environmental Impact Report as required by California law. The Specific Plan and related planning documents will include detailed development standards for public facilities and services. This multi-step planning and approval process includes numerous opportunities for public consideration, input, and formal public hearings.

Working together

Our approach is defined by the university’s charter: “ASU is a comprehensive public research university, measured not by whom it excludes, but by whom it includes and how they succeed; advancing research and discovery of public value; and assuming fundamental responsibility for the economic, social, cultural and overall health of the communities it serves.”

ASU and University Realty are committed to collaborating with local leaders and community members in and around Reche Canyon to find workable solutions that address current challenges and expand opportunities for the area.
